美國服裝設計學系以培養學生人文素質與表達服裝設計創作之專業技術與能力為教育目標，透過作品競賽、展演等創作驗證中發展個人特質與設計創作力，同時為因應服飾產業人才需求以及擴展學生就業空間，分別規劃設計、經營企劃、生產管理、織品設計等專業輔助選修課程，為服飾產業培育全方位之專業人才。

　　在申請方面，服裝專業除了托福成績之外(僅小部分學校接受雅思成績)，本科生需要參加SAT考試，Master Degree的話，如果是偏設計方面的專業，一般不需要GRE成績，但也有少部分學校有要求。

　　服裝設計專業基本上是屬于藝術類的，而藝術類專業一般還是比較注重你的Portfolio的，也就是個人作品。因為其實這才是你學術成績的最有力的證明，特別是去讀研究生，學校其實只是提供給你一個更為專業的環境，讓你去充實自己、開闊眼界、從而更進一步的豐富自己的作品以及藝術修養。因此要注意在這個方面的準備。可以在前期陶瓷的時候把整理好的Portfolio發給教授看一下，同時介紹一下自己的特點等等。另外要注意的就是，藝術類的獎學金一般不多，所以如果沒有一定的經濟基礎的申請者，需要在擇校的時候也要多關注每個學校不同的資助情況。
